Garden

Our garden has been a source of many projects for the last 30 plus years, as well as much enjoyment. Rita is an avid rose collector and has been gardening for most of her life, Francesca was born to tend to a vegetable patch and Sandy is the maintenance man – that is to say, he does the heavy lifting of cutting trees, mowing lawns, and creating out ‘piazzette’.

We keep some vegetables, seasonally, in the ‘kitchen garden’ but most of the area is filled with roses (some older than Francesca!), a few fruit and flowering trees (some as old as the house), shrubby perennials and places to sit and enjoy the views – we call these ‘le piazzette’.

We are planning on building a green house this summer so that we can keep some more tender perennials alive during the winter (geraniums, our beloved oleander) and start seedlings a little earlier for the kitchen garden.

Now that we are back in the house (after a major renovation), we are working toward hosting lunches ‘al fresco’ in the garden – food cooked in the house and served outside, under an arbour of clematis and roses or next to the very old an unidentified apple tree with views of climbing borlotti beans in the kitchen garden.

Our ‘lunches in the garden’ will be coming soon…
